How to Get to Benagil Cave: Every Route, With Real Numbers

Times and fares checked in July 2026. Bus frequencies change with the season, so confirm on the operator's own timetable before you rely on one.

One thing that surprises people: the cheapest boat trip from Portimão costs about the same as a return taxi from Lagoa, and it includes hotel pick-up. If you have no car, comparing the cave trip against a bus fare is the wrong comparison. Compare it against the whole cost of getting yourself there and back.

Benagil sits off the M1273, a few minutes south of the N125 between Lagoa and Porches. Every route funnels into the same narrow lane down to the cove, and that lane is where summer afternoons go wrong: it is single track in places, there is nowhere to turn at the bottom, and cars queue.

The kayak operators are blunt about this in their own booking notes: in July, August and September, arrive an hour before your start time, because parking is the thing most likely to make you miss the trip. On the 07:15 and 09:00 departures it is a non-issue.

• Praia do Carvalho: free parking with a walk of about 15 minutes into Benagil
• Vale de Centeanes: free parking about 30 minutes away on the coastal path
• Praia da Marinha: a large free car park 2 km east, and the best plan B in August

Public transport to Benagil exists and is thin. Two Vamus Algarve lines serve the village, and both need checking against the current timetable at vamusalgarve.pt before you commit a morning to them.

Line 77 runs from Lagoa bus station and reaches Benagil in about 25 minutes. It goes three times a day on weekdays between May and October, with no weekend service, and drops to one morning and one afternoon departure the rest of the year.

Line 52 runs between Alvor and Armação de Pêra by way of Praia da Rocha and Carvoeiro. From Carvoeiro it takes about 15 minutes to Benagil, from Armação de Pêra about 40, from Praia da Rocha about 55, and from Alvor about an hour and ten. It is the more frequent of the two and the more useful if you are staying anywhere along that line.

Neither service is designed for tourists, and neither will get you to a 07:15 kayak. If you are relying on buses, aim for a mid-morning trip and accept the crowds, or book something with pick-up.

A taxi from Lagoa runs roughly €10 to 15 each way, and from Carvoeiro it is a short hop. Uber and Bolt both operate in the Algarve and cover this stretch of coast in season.

The catch is the return. Benagil is a hamlet of about sixty residents with no taxi rank, and phone coverage on the clifftop is fine but drivers are not always willing to come out for a single fare in high season. If you take a taxi in, either book the return in advance with the same driver or check that your app shows cars nearby before you let the first one go.

This is the single most common transport complaint about Benagil, and it is entirely avoidable with one phone call.

Getting to the village is not the same as getting into the cave. Every trip starts somewhere else along the coast, and the boat time from each is what decides how long your trip lasts.

If the cave is your priority, launch as close to it as you can: a guided kayak from the cove spends its time in the caves rather than travelling. If a day on the water is the point, the longer runs from Albufeira give you more of it, with a swim stop included.

From Lisbon

About 270 km and 2 hours 40 minutes by car on the A2 and A22, with tolls. By train, Lisbon to Tunes or Silves takes roughly three hours and leaves you with a taxi or bus connection of another 30 to 40 minutes. Doing Benagil as a Lisbon day trip means at least six hours of travel for two minutes in a cave, which is why the reviews from people who tried it in winter and got cancelled are so bleak.

If you are coming from Lisbon, stay a night.

From Faro airport

About 60 km and 50 minutes by car on the A22. Airport transfers and rental cars both work; buses require a change in Albufeira or Lagoa and are slow. Most visitors pick up a car at the airport, and for this coast that is the right call.

From a cruise ship in Portimão

The RIB meeting point is a short walk from the terminal, around the terminal fencing, which several reviewers describe doing on foot in a few minutes. A 1.5-hour trip fits comfortably inside a port call and needs no transport arrangements at all.

Hotel pick-up and drop-off is included on the 1.5-hour boat trips from Portimão, at no extra cost over the $14.27 ticket. For anyone staying between Alvor and Ferragudo, that turns the entire transport question into a pick-up time.

It is worth doing the arithmetic before you rent a car for the day. Two people paying for a car, fuel and parking to reach Benagil under their own steam will spend more than two seats on a boat that collects them from their hotel. The car earns its keep if you also want the coastal trail, the free beaches and the clifftop, which is a genuinely good day out. It does not earn its keep if the cave is the only thing on the list.

Getting to Benagil is easy and getting into it is not, which is the whole shape of a day here. Drive in early, park for three euros, walk the clifftop, then take the boat or kayak that does the part you cannot do yourself.
